Emergency services were called to the baggage claim area of Terminal Two at 1pm local time and aerial footage from the airport shows hundreds of people standing on the tarmac after being evacuated from the terminal.
As ambulances rush to the scene, at least one person can be seen bleeding on the ground and receiving treatment from paramedics outside the terminal.
All flights both into and out of the airport were immediately suspended and arrivals diverted to alternate airports while the emergency was ongoing.
More than 73,000 passengers use Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport every day, making it one of the 25 busiest in the USA.
Florida governor Rick Scott traveled to the airport when the story broke so that he could be briefed by law enforcement officials.
Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who was at the airport, said everyone started running as soon as shots rang out. He added: “The police aren’t letting anyone out of the airport – at least not the area where I am.”
