Two-vehicle wreck near Aguajito Road claims life of North Carolina local, authorities say
MONTEREY, CA, (November 10, 2024) - A 19-year-old North Carolina resident was killed following a hit-and-run collision in Monterey Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Maddie Elizabeth Fletcher, 19, from Shelby, North Carolina, was killed in a two-vehicle collision along Highway 1 in Monterey Sunday morning, according to the Highway Patrol.
The tragedy unfolded around 9:48 a.m. on northbound Highway 1 just past Aguajito Road.
A preliminary investigation found that a Black Honda driven by Maddie Elizabeth Fletcher was traveling northbound on Highway 1 when it was struck by a silver Nissan. As a result of the collision, Fletcher lost control of the Honda, veered off the road, and slammed into a tree. The driver of the Nissan did not stop at the scene, police said.
Fletcher, a native of Shelby, North Carolina, died at the scene, according to the coroner's office.
CHP-Monterey says an investigation is ongoing.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
Failure to remain on the collision site can attract criminal charges, and the victim can also pursue a case against the driver.
Hit-and-run crashes killed around 2049 people in 2016— a 62% increase from 2009, the last year in which a downward trend was recorded. AAA said the data makes 2016 the deadliest year since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.
