New research has shown that conservatives are way more appealing compared to those who are left-leaning.
According to the study published by Journal of Public Economics, the appealing appearance of a person is associated with their political views, Washington Times reported.
The study gathered different politicians’ images from the U.S., Australia, Finland and Europe and evaluated them by ranking the physical attractiveness of each leader using a five-point scale: very unattractive (1), Below average (2), Average (3), Above average (4), Very handsome or beautiful (5), and revealed that good-looking politicians are likely to be from the right-wing parties.
In a U.S election, if the voters have low information about the candidate, Republican supporters tend to rely more on the politician’s physical appearance compared to Democratic supporters. Nevertheless, if the voters have much information about the candidate, they tend to vote regardless of the candidate’s appearance, the study revealed.
“We show that in municipal elections, a beauty increase of one standard deviation attracts about 20% more votes for the average non-incumbent candidate on the right and about 8% more votes for the average non-incumbent candidate on the left,” the study said.
Researchers explained a more “general psychological explanation” of this study saying that people who have a beauty advantage see the world as “fair” not “fare.”
In a statement, the study explained, “A more general psychological explanation could be that good-looking people are more likely to perceive the world as a just place, since they are treated better than others, achieve higher status and are happier while a frequent reason for people to sympathize with the left is a perception of the world as unfair,”
