At least four Israeli soldiers were killed and 15 other injured when a truck rammed into the soldiers. The victims were on their way to a popular promenade in Jerusalem. They were in the process of disembarking from a bus when the attack took place.
Police Chief Roni Alsheikh said the truck attacker was “an east Jerusalem Palestinian” who was shot dead by the other soldiers.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri described the attack as “a terrorist attack”. The incident took place at the Armon Hanatziv promenade that overlooks Jerusalem’s Old Walled City.
Emergency responder MDA paramedic Chen Lendi Sharon said: “When we arrived there was chaos, I saw a truck that rammed youngsters getting off the bus next to the Armon Hanatziv view point. On the grass near the road, [there] lay 10 trapped individuals. Teams arrived on the scene, provided medical treatment and evacuated the injured to hospital.”
‘Palestinian campaign of incitement’
The attack is the latest in a yearlong wave of Palestinian attacks against Israelis. The truck attack on the promenade recorded the first Israeli casualties in three months.
Records show that last year’s attacks by Palestinians have killed 36 Israelis and two American tourists. The same period also shows that 229 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire. Israel said that most of the Palestinians that were killed were attackers and the rest died in clashes.
According to Israel, the attacks were intensified by a Palestinian campaign of incitement. Palestinians, on the other hand, said that it was a result of nearly 50 years of occupation by Israel and the desire for an independent state.
