Nicholas Stoian tragically killed in Bazetta multi-vehicle crash

Thursday's collision happened at Ohio routes 5 and 305

BAZETTA, OH, (October 17, 2024) - A deadly six-vehicle collision on State Route 5 in Bazetta Township resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries Thursday afternoon. 

Police Lights Nicholas Stoian Nicholas Stoian lost his life on Thursday as the result of a six-vehicle pileup that police said was caused by a teenage driver.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that the crash took place just after 12:30 p.m.

According to OSHP, a 2021 Audi A7, driven by a teenager, was traveling on Ohio 5 and failed to stop at a red light at the intersection with Ohio 305, crashing into the back of a 2015 Ford Escape driven by 38-year-old Nicholas Stoian of Cortland.

The impact set off a chain reaction involving a total of six vehicles.

Stoian was transported to an area hospital but did not survive his injuries. 

Two other individuals were also injured. 

OSHP suspects distracted driving as a potential cause and is continuing their investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving crashes accounted for 15 percent of all motor vehicle injuries in 2018. An estimated 400,000 individuals were hurt. An estimated 33,000 people, or 8 percent of victims, were injured in 2018 in crashes involving cell phone use or other cell-phone-related activities, said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Nicholas Stoian could pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.
