Deadly wreck happened at East Barthman Avenue and South 4th Street, authorities say
COLUMBUS, OH, (November 05, 2024) - A Tuesday afternoon crash between two vehicles claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and injured two adults, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Felix Estrada, 16, was killed following a two-vehicle collision in Columbus Tuesday afternoon, police said, adding two adults sustained injuries.
The tragedy unfolded at East Barthman Avenue and South 4th Street, east of South High Street, police said.
A preliminary investigation found that a Volkswagen Golf was traveling southbound on South 4th Street around 2:25 p.m. when an ATV drove out of an alley and crashed into the passenger side of the Volkswagen. The driver of the ATV and the 16-year-old passenger—identified as Felix Estrada—were ejected and rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, the juvenile died from injuries on Tuesday night.
Officials said the Volkswagen driver was transported to Ohio State University East Hospital for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing.
CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED
The American College of Surgeons reports that ATV riders fare much worse in crashes than motorcycle riders — even when they're wearing helmets.
According to Consumer Product Safety Commission statistics, about 568 adults and 144 children die each year in ATV and UTV crashes, and many more are injured.
While the cause and liability of the crash are being investigated, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said that it is imperative to have an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned attorney.
“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond.
WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM
Pending the investigation, the family members of Felix Estrada may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.
“We understand that losing a loved one is not only a deeply emotional loss but also an economic one,” said Bond, a national analyst for Newsline. “If you have lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence, contact a wrongful death attorney and get the guidance needed to obtain the justice you deserve.”
“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth. However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure they are treated respectfully and compensated fairly.”
